London Youth Club Reduces Energy Bills with HeatingSave


Established in 1884, The Devas Club is a youth club and community centre, based in Battersea, London, offering opportunities and activities to young people aged 8 to 25. 

Their facilities include a gym, recording studio and radio room, which are located on the lower ground floor. The ground floor also houses a fit-for-purpose kitchen, social areas, a computer suite and an art room. The first floor offers a large gymnasium and a smaller rehearsal space, while some office space is located on the second floor. There is an enclosed basketball court on the roof.

In 2019, The Devas Club reached out to Crew Energy who deliver low-carbon solutions and energy advice in the Boroughs of South-West London. A central plank of Crew Energy’s method of cutting carbon is deploying HeatingSave as a retro-fit to existing heating/cooling systems. “We use HeatingSave because HeatingSave is such better value for money than the alternative options and works in cutting carbon emissions”, said the company’s Director, Toby Costin.

One of the main reasons The Devas Club installed a HeatingSave building management system (BMS) was to save money and reduce energy waste. Prior to HeatingSave, the entire building was heated from 8am for the office space on the second floor until 9pm when the youth club closes. The youth club opens from 4pm; therefore, large areas of the building were vacant throughout the day but were still being heated. “The ability to zone heat to suit needs” was a pivotal factor in the decision to use HeatingSave, Mr. Costin told our reporter.

Toby Costin explained to the HeatingSave reporter The savings should be pretty big at The Devas Club. It will save them a lot of money because they were basically heating an empty building”. Due to Coronavirus, the building has not been in as much use as it normally would. This means that it is hard to say exactly how much they have been able to save but Mr. Costin believes the youth club will be “saving around 160kwh per year” when the youth club is back to its full use.

“The staff at HeatingSave are brilliant. They always get back to us if we call them and will go through stuff with me or with a client”, Toby explained to the HeatingSave reporter. He added, “They go that extra mile, they really do. I am very happy with the level of support”.

Asked whether he would recommend the HeatingSave building management system to other companies, Toby said, “Yes, it’s brilliant. I think it is excellent”.   

When summing up HeatingSave in a few words, Mr. Costin said, “A fantastic product that can save money, cut carbon and improve air quality, which is important”.
