Britain considers introducing criminal sanctions against energy companies

The recent energy price hikes announced by four of the UK's Big Six energy suppliers have been met with discontentment and significant hostility by consumers, thus prompting ministers to take a very tough public stance against these companies.

And now, according to a recent news report, energy minister Ed Davey revealed that the Government is seriously considering introducing criminal sanctions against energy firms that manipulate the market at the expense of consumers.

MPs have already accused the "big six" energy firms of sticking together in order to produce above-inflation price rises which they unveiled just as the country entered its coldest months. On the other hand, top managers from RWE nPower, EDF Energy, Centrica, SSE, E.ON. and Scottish Power, a unit of Spain's Iberdrola, dismissed those claims.
