Britain considers introducing criminal sanctions against energy companies

The recent energy price hikes announced by four of the UK’s Big Six energy suppliers have been met with discontentment and significant hostility by consumers, thus prompting ministers to take a very tough public stance against these companies.

And now, according to a recent news report, energy minister Ed Davey revealed that the Government is seriously considering introducing criminal sanctions against energy firms that manipulate the market at the expense of consumers.

MPs have already accused the “big six” energy firms of sticking together in order to produce above-inflation price rises which they unveiled just as the country entered its coldest months. On the other hand, top managers from RWE nPower, EDF Energy, Centrica, SSE, E.ON. and Scottish Power, a unit of Spain’s Iberdrola, dismissed those claims.

Although the treat of criminal sanctions might deter some of these suppliers from attempting to manipulate the market to their benefit, the truth of the matter is that the best solution for reducing and thoroughly managing energy bills is the implementation of a solid and reliable Building Energy Management system.
