Nottingham Playhouse to undergo £1m makeover for superior energy efficiency


The Nottingham Playhouse is a Grade II listed building that was officially opened back in 1963, when energy-related costs were significantly lower than they are today.

However, as the theatre marks its 50’th anniversary this year, its overall architecture makes it extremely expensive to heat and light, and for this reason, it has been awarded nearly 1 million pounds for an extensive overhaul, designed to make it more energy efficient.

According to a news report in the local media, the funds will be used for installing solar panels, building new door lobbies to reduce heat loss and replacing lighting in a bid to cut 35,000KW of energy usage and save nearly £10,000 a year. However, that will represent just part of the savings, the grand total reaching an impressive £35,000 a year after all the energy-saving measures have been implemented.

Peter Knott, Area Director at Arts Council England, which awarded the £996,000 fund said: “We are working hard with organisations in the cultural sector to increase their sustainability both financially and ecologically. This award does both and will enable Nottingham Playhouse to ensure that their building is energy efficient and make the best of use of space available. This project demonstrates the theatre’s commitment to finding more environmentally efficient ways of doing business, whilst creating the best value-for-money possible.”
