Cardiff Bay Yacht Club Saves 34% on heating bills

Cardiff Bay Yacht Club

Located on the water’s edge overlooking Cardiff Bay, Cardiff Bay Yacht Club can trace its origins all the way back to 1932. It is now one of the premier water sports clubs in Wales and was awarded ‘Volvo Championship Club’ status (now known as British Youth Sailing Recognised Club) in 2004 – one of only three clubs in Wales to achieve this remarkable standard. In 2023 it was awarded the Bristol Channel Yachting Association Club of the Year award.

The Club offers its members a wide range of facilities both nautical and social. It has extensive mooring rights for 500 boats with a fully piled pontoon system on the River Ely, while its current Clubhouse, opened in 1998 by H.R.H. Princess Anne, has two bars, ample changing facilities, and the Club’s Administration Office as well as training facilities.

Cardiff Bay Yacht Club have been a HeatingSave customer for a while, getting their system installed just before the COVID-19 Pandemic. Roger Wallington, Cardiff Bay Yacht Club’s Secretary and Energy Manager, explained how the system has been significantly beneficial for the building.

“I was looking for an inexpensive retrofit system” said Roger. Originally, the Yacht Club had a standard heating control system that was not tamper proof. This affected the building’s energy consumption; with Roger’s experienced background in energy management, he knew that something needed to be done.

Roger explained that every room is used differently and with the HeatingSave system, each room is now a zone, permitting better managed energy consumption for the building.

“Using HeatingSave, we can have a room temperature turned down when it’s not in use and programmed to provide heat when in use.” remarked Roger.

“If I remember correctly HeatingSave saved 50% of our consumption during the COVID lockdown period.”

The club has an upstairs bar, downstairs bar, office, changing facilities and another area used for teaching. There are now a variety of activates happening daily, meaning some areas can be double booked.

Roger said, “We have saved about 35% on heating even with increased usage of the club since Covid” he added, whilst explaining that the club’s usage is about up to 20% greater now than before COVID, meaning extra showers and heating.

We asked if the return on investment was satisfactory and Roger clarified that he originally expected a reasonable two and half to three years. However due to COVID it paid for itself within the first year. “HeatingSave has certainly cut our costs” he said.

Before HeatingSave the water heating was on 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and the space heating was on a programmer that could easily be misused. “HeatingSave intelligently controls the hot water heating” said Roger. He also added, “it is very easy for me to use and has proven to be easy for our office manager too”

Roger also uses HeatingSave to look at the club’s energy consumption analytics, where he remarked, “We use the room bookings system to take care of any changes to the pattern and I make a lot of use of the graphs and visualisation for diagnostics”.

We also asked Roger is he had used the HeatingSave Helpdesk whereupon Roger described the helpdesk as “always being there for any problems they have”.

Summing Heating Save up in a few words Roger concluded, “HeatingSave services building’s, heating and water heating systems with ease, enabling local management to control devices in accordance with operational plans.”
