The Cambridge Retrofit Project sets itself very ambitious energy-saving goals

The Cambridge Retrofit Project is a landmark community-scale energy efficiency initiative to retrofit buildings over the next 30 years, helping make the Cambridge area the first to reach national carbon reduction targets, namely to reduce carbon emissions by 80 per cent by 2050.

Through an extensive network of businesses, estate firms, building/home owners, local authorities, financiers, academics, national government, contractors and tenants, the Cambridge Retrofit Project is set too coordinate large-scale suites of retrofit projects, which should drive down costs, attract finance and ensure that the group manages to stick to its timetable.

According to its representatives, the Cambridge Retrofit Project will focus on all aspects of energy in buildings from thermal envelopes to energy supply to lighting to plug load, and can be linked to more general refurbishments aimed at improving the quality, value and comfort of buildings.

Quite obviously, the project has quite a huge task ahead of it, given the fact that it will become involved in retrofits of around 20,000 private homes and another 20,000 non-residential properties before the mid-way point of the 21st century. These will include Victorian terraces, modern shopping centres, and the medieval college buildings of the city’s 804-year-old university.

The total cost of retrofits over the course of the programme is expected to be circa £1 billion, but the project team has calculated, however, that the energy-savings that result will be worth more than £1.5bn.

The environmental payoff will be even greater, since the city’s carbon footprint, currently 830,000 tons of CO2 a year, is expected to decrease at a rate of about one per cent a year, eventually falling to about 500,000 tons of CO2 per annum as a result of the retrofit programme.

HeatingSave is a perfect match for this program, not only due to the fact that our advanced building energy management system has been specifically designed in order to help users save up to an impressive 30%+ on all energy bills, but also due to our proximity to Cambridge.

HeatingSave optimizes any heating system’s overall functionality by taking into account a variety of factors, such as internal and external temperatures, occupancy, time of the year, the particular characteristics of installed boilers, etc. All of the data is used in order to determine the best heating patterns for the various heating zones within any building, using our proprietary heat-loss algorithm.

The end result is that users still get a very good level of comfort, while in the same time saving energy and money in the process.
