British households could slash £303 off annual fuel bills by 2020, report suggests

Households that implement various energy saving measures could slash their annual dual fuel bills by up to £303 compared to those with none, claims the Centre for Economics and Business Research, in a recent report.

The research predicts the combination of loft and cavity wall insulation, along with a new boiler, will make the biggest inroads to energy saving, contributing to 38 per cent of the reduction in energy demand over the next five years.

In 1970, just 10 per cent of households in the UK owned a gas central heating system, equivalent to 1.98million households. This figure rose rapidly in subsequent decades, surpassing 10million in 1983 and reaching 23.2million by 2012, equivalent to 84 per cent of all UK households. Electricity usage similarly peaked in the mid-2000s.

However, energy efficiency measures, better performing appliances and behavioural changes have resulted in a drop in the last ten years. In the period between 2005 and 2014, total gas energy use dropped 27 per cent while electricity use has also fallen 11 per cent – and it is predicted to drop further in the coming years.
