Cost of energy makes the most of household spending in 2012, ONS report reveals

Housing expenses overtook transport as the biggest part of household spending in 2012, with the rise in the overall costs of energy being the most important culprit for the rise, figures from a new report by the ONS (Office for National Statistics) have revealed.

On average, UK households spent £64 a week on transport and £68 on housing, the latter including rent, fuel, electricity and maintenance-related costs, but excluding mortgages.

The ONS said the rise was likely to have been driven in part by rises in gas and electricity prices, with the especially cold winters of 2011 and 2012 contributing to extra spending on heating. However, the the proportion of people renting their homes was also a factor.

In total, the average household spent £489 a week last year, which means that spending has decreased since 2006, when households spent £526, but the fall was consistent with trends seen in the economy during the period.
