Labour’s energy freeze plan rejected by MPs

Labour’s proposal to freeze energy prices for 20 months should the party win the next elections has been rejected during a vote in the House of Commons, a news report in the media has revealed.

The proposal, which was announced by Ed Miliband at the party’s conference, was met with significant criticism and hostility by energy companies – in fact, it is widely believed that the recent price hikes announced by four of the Big Six energy suppliers also included a significant hedging component against the future price freeze.

The vote came at the end of an opposition day debate called by Labour, with Conservative and Liberal Democrat MPs joining forces to defeat the proposal, that was ultimately rejected by 295 votes to 237 votes.
