An expert says it will cost £5,000 per person a year in the UK between now and 2050 to rebuild the nation's entire energy system along low carbon lines. Professor David MacKay, chief scientific adviser to the Department of Energy and Climate Change, says there is little difference in cost between this and a 'do nothing' scenario which busts the UK's carbon targets. The 'do nothing' path would cost £4,682 a year, relying on imported gas and oil.
