Energy efficiency improvements on the table for Scottish distillery, courtesy of the GIB

A Scottish distillery will implement extensive energy efficiency improvements with the help of UK Green Investment Bank (GIB), as part of a project to reduce its overall operational costs, a news report on the matter was able to reveal.

As part of this project, the Royal Brackla Distillery, run by John Dewar & Sons, in Nairn, Scotland, will have a biomass boiler installed. The new boiler will produce steam that is required for several parts of the whisky production process, and will reduce energy costs and greenhouse gas emissions at the distillery.

John Dewar & Sons Royal Brackla distillery operations director Iain Lochhead is sure that the energy efficiency improvements “will mark a significant change in the environmental performance of the distillery as we are expecting an annual target reduction of some 5,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions.

“This goes hand-in-hand with our Company’s larger “Good Spirited” goal to reduce greenhouse gas emissions globally by 50% by 2017.”

Energy management systems might represent a sizeable investment for any company, but the rapidly rising energy prices can actually deliver a very rapid return on investment, experts in the field have argued.

A recent paper on this topic has argued that over half of firms have appointed a senior director to manage energy spending and implement energy efficiency measures.

The range of energy saving programmes directors can vary largely, depending on the available funding, the company’s size, premises, site specifics.

However, regardless of the particular approach, directors who are serious about slashing their energy bills will need to consider retrofitting their premises in some way, whether we’re talking about putting in renewable energy measures or more complex Building Energy Management Systems.

An energy management and monitoring system can help companies stay on top of their energy usage and reduce their overall bills by running their light/heating systems in an optimum manner.
