Green Deal scheme should be extended to SMEs, report suggests

Government should extend the Green Deal programme to small and medium enterprises and the UK Green Investment Bank (GIB) should offer low interest loans to these small companies in order to promote energy efficiency, a new report drawn up by the Westminster Sustainable Business Forum and Carbon Connect suggests.

The paper, called "Building Efficiency: Reducing Energy Demand in the Commercial Sector", suggests that the future profitability of UK companies could be significantly affected by a series of factors, such as an increasing reliance on electricity, Government policy impacts on energy bills and future energy price volatility.

The best way to offset such hazards is by investing in energy efficiency, taking advantage of an estimated £1.6bn worth of cost savings open to the commercial sector. Unfortunately, the lack of upfront capital available for many SMEs and micro-businesses is a major barrier to energy efficiency investment.

For this reason, the UK Green Investment Bank (GIB) is being urged to offer low interest loans to SMEs to stimulate the market for energy efficiency, in a sort of "Green Deal" scheme targeting small companies, rather than individuals.

Building Energy Management Systems are capable of delivering extensive monitoring and control options, compared to basic controls. They typically employ data from a variety of sources (boiler flow and return sensors, internal and external temperature sensors, occupancy sensors, humidity sensors, etc.), and enable the perfect optimization of a building's boiler-based central heating system.

HeatingSave is also approved to work and save fuel within the Energy Technology List, which is managed by the Carbon Trust on behalf of the Government. It is also approved by the Department of Energy & Climate Change and the Energy Savings Trust and was specified by the Building Research Establishment for the energy efficient homes retro-fit program, called The Greenhouse Project.

Last, but certainly not least, it's important to mention that HeatingSave is a component part of the Government's Green Deal program.
