Impington Village College to implement extensive energy performance programme

A South Cambridgeshire college is set to implement a very ambitious energy saving programme that could see it benefit from an estimated added revenue of £3 million over 15 years, a news report in the local media has revealed.

The Impington Village College (IVC) is a coeducational secondary school and sixth form with academy status, located in Impington, just north of Cambridge. The school enrolls children aged 11–18 and educates pupils from a mix of nations and cultures.

The IVC’s buildings date back to the 1930’s, and are not energy efficient. For this reason, the school has entered a partnership with leading construction group Skanksa, that will involve a major retrofit which will reduce the College’s carbon footprint by an estimated 50%.

The programme will also bring a range of educational benefits and learning opportunities to students, as well as introducing a behaviour change programme which is intended to filter into the local community.

The energy saving measures set to be implemented as part of this scheme will require an investment of £1 million through an Energy Performance Contract (EPC). Skanska will fund this upfront through private investment, and then recoup the funds over a seven-year period (through a combination of savings on bills, revenue generated through the sale of any surplus energy, and drawing on government incentives).

Once the investment has been paid off the additional revenue will bring the College an estimated £3 million over the following 15 years.

HeatingSave has quite an extensive experience in the educational segment, our intelligent Building Energy Management System managing to reduce overall energy bills for numerous schools and academies by anywhere between 20 and 30%+.

HeatingSave optimizes any heating system’s overall functionality by taking into account a variety of factors, such as internal and external temperatures, occupancy, time of the year, the particular characteristics of installed boilers, etc. All of the data is used in order to determine the best heating patterns for the various heating zones within any building, using our proprietary heat-loss algorithm.

The end result is that users still get a very good level of comfort, while in the same time saving energy and money in the process.
