S-IMPLER project to focus on optimizing insulation retrofitting for solid wall homes

The Northern Ireland Housing Executive (NIHE) has joined forces with the BRE, Carillion Energy Services and other key partners in order to launch S-IMPLER, a new research and demonstration project designed to help the refurbishment sector achieve effective and economical retrofit of insulation in solid wall homes.

The main target of the S-IMPLER Project -Solid Wall Innovative Insulation and Monitoring Processes using Lean Energy Efficient Retrofit – is to attain an overall reduction of 60% in monitored energy costs of 1950s solid wall homes.

The project, which is estimated to last for three years, aims to demonstrate how retrofit work can be carried out with less disruption and completed at least 10% faster compared to current solutions, with no impact on quality and safety.

In order to determine a building’s real energy performance, S-IMPLER will rely on data supplied by a whole house monitoring system, whose development process is led by Tensor Systems (HeatingSave’s parent company) and that’s being built around the proven HeatingSave technology.

The core of the HeatingSave system is a state-of-the-art microprocessor connected to a number of temperature sensors measuring the external outside temperature, room, hot water tank and heating flow & return temperatures. The system can easily calculates the amount of fuel and electricity used each day to prove precisely just how much energy can be saved.

S-IMPLER will also integrate several other innovations, including: an inventive surveying tool, led by VRM Technology, providing dwelling specific accurate details of labour and materials requirements across multiple green measures and a Building Information Modelling tool, led by the University of Salford. Plus, more in-depth analysis of the fabric performance of the retrofitted homes will be conducted by Leeds Metropolitan University.

Data obtained from the project will then be disseminated via events, and through S-IMPLER guides to specification, procurement and monitoring.
