UK government launches new programme to support “game changing” energy technologies

The UK government has launched a new programme to look for ”game changing” technologies that could be potentially adapted to the energy-efficiency industry, a recent news report has been able to reveal.

The scheme is ran by Innovate UK and has received a £1.5 million grant from the UK government. Those new to energy and with expertise in inspection, big data and customer engagement that can “help deliver radical change” can bid for a share of the funding.

Innovate UK stated: “We expect businesses working in inspection, ICT, digital, sensors, virtual reality, gaming, robotics, autonomous systems, advanced materials and manufacturing will have ideas of interest to the energy industry.

“Existing defence, aerospace, automotive, telecommunications, forensics, medical, space and creative industries technologies could also be relevant.”

It added the challenges are in three key areas: inspecting buildings and vessels, including identifying defects without human entry, analysing large volumes of data in the energy industry and finding innovative ways to get users to reduce their energy bills.

Building Energy Management Systems are capable of delivering extensive monitoring and control options, compared to basic controls. They typically employ data from a variety of sources (boiler flow and return sensors, internal and external temperature sensors, occupancy sensors, humidity sensors, etc.), and enable the perfect optimization of a building’s boiler-based central heating system.
