Singapore launches ambitious energy savings project

The Building & Construction Authority (BCA) of Singapore has set a challenge for achieving energy savings of at least 20% better than buildings with highest green rating, a recent news report has been able to suggest.

The challenge set by BCA is to achieve an overall energy savings of at least 20% better than the best-in-class Green Mark Platinum building. BCA Green Mark is a green building rating system to evaluate a building for its environmental impact and performance. Green Mark Platinum is the highest rating.

The technologies will be test-bedded in Keppel Bay Tower (KBT), an eighteen-storey commercial building comprising a six storey podium and a basement carpark, with a total Gross Floor Area of about 42,000 sm. It has the Green Mark Platinum rating.

This challenge is intended to provide a platform for large-scale demonstration of emerging technologies in a real world environment that have potential for wider adoption in the market.

Proposals are expected to utilise emerging technologies to help to reduce building landlord’s energy consumption, along with solutions that will reduce tenants’ energy usage. BCA is looking for novel, cost effective technologies / solutions that have potential to deliver high performance in energy efficient, smart and healthy building, and can be scaled up for replication in the market.

Smart technologies could be involved, such as adaptive and intelligent technologies / solutions that are responsive to occupant needs, behavior and individual control. They could enable occupants to connect to buildings’ systems allowing them to adjust/ control or monitor building systems and shared facilities.

HeatingSave Energy Monitoring System – delivering extensive array of data, with control options available

The HeatingSave Building Energy Monitor is a wireless management system that collects information from sensors placed in a building. It is unobtrusive and causes minimal disruption during installation. The system collects internal and external temperature data, along with information on how the heating system works and details of energy use. It also monitors the way a building is used in terms of its occupancy and the occupants’ activities and lifestyles.

Using a password protected standard WiFi connection, sensors can quickly be set up to review and quantitatively analyse the data with user-friendly software graphics, via a laptop, PC, mobile phone or tablet-based device.

A cable connection to the building router also enables data to be uploaded to HeatingSave’s cloud storage servers, where it can be analysed by sophisticated software. This provides a clear understanding of the real impact of energy efficiency measures, for example through pre-installation analysis and post-installation monitoring.

Building owners can access their energy usage details online to help them manage energy use more efficiently. This information is presented using a dashboard system that provides consolidated and drill down views of the energy use data.
