Chelmsford residents achieve massive energy savings

A collective switch scheme has helped residents in Chelmsford secure over £175,000 of total savings on gas and electricity bills, a recent news report in the local media has been able to reveal.

The Essex Energy Switch scheme is run by Essex County Council in partnership with Chelmsford City Council and other district authorities via an independent agent called iChoosr. It works by bringing together residents who want to switch providers and pay less for their gas and electricity.

In Chelmsford, approximately 522 residents signed up to the scheme and chose to switch to the tariff offered by iChoosr, a much higher percentage than the national average of 11 per cent. On average, each city household signing up to the scheme saved £335.15.

Councillor Duncan Lumley, the City Council’s Cabinet Member for Housing, said: “It is estimated that over 49per cent of those who signed up to the scheme had not considered changing tariff or supplier in over three years.

“As well as saving hundreds of pounds for many of our residents, the scheme raises awareness of energy saving and efficiency measures.

“For some, £355 could make a lot of difference in home heating during the winter.

“I am very pleased with the results for Chelmsford and I completely support the scheme.”
